What I can do for you

Let’s do this in a slightly backwards way by starting with what I CAN’T and WON’T do for you.

I will not tackle anything that I don’t feel I am the best person for. Promise you. I set myself up to focus on the stuff that I think I’m really good at – podcasts, media consultancy, copywriting – and that’s all I’ll be doing. I can’t take you from 20 followers to 20,000, and I could have a bash at media training or taking a decent photo but I really wouldn’t be doing myself or you justice if I claimed that those areas were where my skills lay.

But all is not lost because if you’ve stumbled upon my page and you or your business need something extra like social media, video, photography, SEO advice, media training or full service PR, it’s still worth giving me a call or dropping me an email because chances are I’ll know some great people who could really help you.

So that’s the honesty, pledge bit done.

Still with me? Good. Because now I want to tell you about what I can do for you.

Media and PR consultancy

I’ve worked in the media – both print and broadcast – for about 15 years and that means I know it fairly well. It also means that I know a whole load of people who I’ve either worked with, or done work for. And people move. For example among the friends I started with at 5 Live in 2010, hardly any work at that station any more. Instead they’ve spread their wings and landed at Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 4, BBC Breakfast, ITV, Good Morning Britain, Channel 4…the list goes on. But you get my point. I’ve got fantastic contacts. And when I say that, I actually mean proper friends. Too often in PR, account managers will tell their clients they’ve got great contacts when all they actually mean is that they emailed someone a press release once.

I’ve also spent the past five years working very closely with Sale Sharks Rugby Club, driving the club’s media coverage, building the brand and profile among key audiences and building my own and the club’s relationships with journalists and key media titles.

I can help you get your business into the publications or onto the TV or radio stations that you need and want to be on. We’ll work together to work out where and what to aim for and we won’t go for vanity profile. I will help you get your business to your people and prospective customers.

Podcasts

I think I’m also a dab hand when it comes to podcasts. I present one – the multi award-winning BBC podcast You, Me and the Big C – and I produce another award-winning BBC podcast called Hooked: The Unexpected Addicts. I’ve also appeared on a number of other pods as guests and when you combine that with my production skills picked up at the BBC, it means I’m well placed to:

  • help you set up a pod from scratch
  • record one using my kit – or yours!
  • advise on what might be involved in starting a pod
  • edit a pod together if you’ve already got the recording side covered

Basically, whatever you need on the podcast front, I can help. And again, if I can’t I’ll definitely know someone who will.

Copywriting

My dream as a kid was always to become a print journalist. The move to radio was entirely unplanned and while it has been great fun, writing will always be my first journalistic passion. And I’ve done a fair bit of it.

I’ve written for almost every national newspaper and a fair few magazines too and that means adapting my style, length, tone etc. And it’s that skill that lends itself to copywriting.
